Mayor's Message

Dear Friend,

This Sunday is Mother’s Day, a day to honor the remarkable women in our life.

Mother’s Day may officially be celebrated once a year, but the contributions that our mothers make in our life every day are visible all year long. A mother offers unconditional love and support. A mother is your biggest fan, cheering you on to greatness and consoling you in times of hardship. A mother offers advice, bandages injuries and reads bedtime stories. She puts in endless hours working inside and outside of the home. She is a role model and an inspiration for her children.

There are many ways to celebrate your mom and thank her for all that she does on this Mother’s Day. The Mennello Museum is hosting its Family Fun Day where admission is free for the entire family and children can make a craft project for mom. You can also take your mom on a stroll through beautiful Leu Gardens where moms receive free admission all day.

To all of the mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, and friends, I wish you a Happy Mother’s Day.

Sincerely,

Buddy Dyer
Mayor

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer Helps to “Clean the World”

Recently, Mayor Dyer joined a team from Orlando's own Clean the World on a soap distribution trip to the Dominican Republic.

Each day, more than 9,000 children around the world die from diseases that can be prevented by washing with bar soap. In an effort to alleviate this problem, Clean the World takes partially-used soap from hotels, sterilizes and recycles it and then distributes the soap to children and families who do not have access to or cannot afford soap. As a result, Clean the World has also prevented 1.5 million pounds of hotel waste from going into our landfills.

During their three-day trip, Mayor Dyer and the team distributed 10,000 bars of soap to 2,000 children who live in five different villages across the country. The team also taught the children how to use the soap to properly kill germs – using a superhero skit and a song to the tune of La Bamba.

While there, the team partnered with Children International, an organization that provides many social services for children including after school care, medical and dental services. The organization serves the poorest of the poor, and the families have an average monthly income of $120. Only 20% of the families have piped water and may have to walk up to two miles to get their water each day. Many of the children must walk 45 minutes to receive the services offered at the Children International centers.

Clean the World is making a difference in lives around the world. The organization doesn't just distribute internationally but also to the underserved and homeless right here in our own community.
