Women Safety

General Information

Do not advertise that you are a woman living alone. Only use your first initial on the mailbox and for telephone listings.

Make sure your apartment number is not printed on your assigned parking space. Do not advertise whether, or not, you are home.

Never put a decal with your apartment number on your car.

When working late, keep all entrances locked. Ask someone to accompany you to your car.

When going to shopping malls or parks at night, go with a friend. There is safety in numbers.

At work, keep your purse hidden, not at your feet or in the big drawer by your side. These are the first places someone will look.

Consider carefully what you keep in your purse. Here is a list of suggested do’s and don’ts:

  • Do’s

    • Driver’s license

    • Keys

    • 1 or 2 credit cards

    • A few dollars

    • 2 quarters for the telephone

    • A whistle for calling help

  • Don’ts

    • All your credit cards

    • Large amounts of cash

    • Your phone number and address on your keys

    • Address book (with phone numbers and addresses of all your friends)

    • Important documents (title, birth cert. etc.)

Purse Snatching - Pick Pockets

If you carry a purse with a shoulder strap, do not strap it across your body or tie it to you. Someone determined to take it from you may cause unnecessary injury. Let it go! Try to get into the habit of keeping your hand on the cover/flap to discourage pick-pockets or sneak thieves.
