WHAT IS ACCREDITATION

In 1993, Florida Statute 943.125 encouraged the Florida Sheriff Association and the Florida Police Chiefs Association to create an independent law enforcement accreditation program. Accreditation creates a system for maintaining a high level of professionalism.

In 1997, the Orlando Police Department became an accredited police agency as certified by the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation. To accomplish this task, the agency showed compliance with hundreds of standards established by the Commission. These standards ensure agencies provide quality service to the community, as well as reduce liability for the agency and its members.

On 10-28-2000, we successfully completed our first reaccreditation. Once again, outside agencies were invited to review and inspect the procedures and workings of the police department. The Orlando Police Department passed with flying colors, successfully meeting every requirement.

On 10/08/2003, we rose to the challenge and completed our second reaccreditation. We also achieved National Recognition from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). This time, we invited outside agency representatives from CFA and CALEA to inspect our policies and practices and we met over 250 State and National requirements. Members and citizens should feel proud and confident that the Orlando Police Department is a State Accredited and Internationally recognized professional police agency.
