PKZ Children Join the Orlando Magic and Hunt Construction to Tour the Events Center Construction Site

WHAT: The children of the City of Orlando’s Parramore Kidz Zone project will be joining the Orlando Magic, the Hunt Construction Management Team in conjunction with HZ Construction at their Construction & Kids Safety BBQ celebrating the construction of the Orlando Events Center. The event will focus on the importance of safety on a construction site, give an overview of the Orlando Events Center, and introduce the young participants to different careers in construction. Participants will be able to meet and eat with minority contractors working on the project. The Orlando Magic’s community ambassadors Nick Anderson and Bo Outlaw spoke to the children about making positive life choices while representatives from numerous local and minority subcontracting companies that are working on the Events Center taught the children about the various aspects of their specific fields.

“The intent of the event is to give our youth exposure to the world of construction and feel the excitement of the Events Center being built in their community,” Joshua Kirven, M/WBE Director states.

Modeled after the Harlem Children’s Zone, Parramore Kidz Zone employs creative outreach to engage a critical mass of Parramore’s children and linking them to positive opportunities, including pre-kindergarten education, parenting education, health care, mentoring, tutoring, and constructive activities when school is out.

Orlando’s NBA franchise since 1989, the Magic’s mission is to be world champions on and off the court, delivering legendary moments every step of the way. Off the court, on an annual basis the Orlando Magic gives more than $2 million to the local community and impacts an estimated 75,000 kids each year. The Orlando Magic is also the developer of the new downtown Events Center opening in the fall of 2010, and the facility will be operated by the City of Orlando and owned by the Central Florida Community.

This past year, PKZ was pleased to announce across-the-board reductions in juvenile crime, teen pregnancy and school failure in the Parramore community over the past 3 years, since PKZ began.
