City of Orlando Planting Final 7 Trees of 10,000 Trees Initiative

WHAT: Mayor Buddy Dyer and City Commissioners will be raising awareness about Orlando’s urban tree canopy by planting the seven final trees during a week long celebration of the 10,000 Trees Initiative, a project to restore the forestry damage incurred by the hurricanes of 2004. The commemoration will begin with the 9,994th tree planting on Friday, December 11 and culminate in the 10,000th tree planting by Mayor Dyer on Thursday, December 17 at 3:30 p.m. at Wadeview park. The project will successfully meet its goal of replacing the 10,000 trees lost in Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Jean by 2010.

The City of Orlando’s Families, Parks and Recreation Department, Green-up Orlando and Keep Orlando Beautiful, Inc., launched the 10,000 Trees Initiative, a tree replacement strategy to keep Orlando beautiful. The goal of the 10,000 Trees Initiative was designed to replace the urban canopy in the Orlando community by 2010, so that the long-term effects of the storms in 2004 are minimized and Orlando remains “The City Beautiful.”
