John H. Jackson Community Center History

Highlights:

Dedicated in memory of Orlando's first black Recreation Superintendent, who dreamed of a place where youth have access to positive recreational and educational opportunities, the John H. Jackson Community Center has developed that dream into a reality. The site offers positive recreational activities in the after-school and summer camp programming for children ages 5-10, provides teens ages 11-17 age appropriate activities through Digital U, and hip-hop dancing, while simultaneously offering the newly dedicated Orlando Magic Computer Lab bringing new-age technology to the neighbors in the Parramore Heritage Community. Other amenities desirable at the facility include youth and adult fitness center, PlayCity playground, tennis courts, swimming pool, and a community room for reunions, meetings, and neighborhood dinners.

Programs:

Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida - Parramore Branch (ages 11 - 17):  Monday - Thursday 12 p.m. – 8 p.m., Fri 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. Encouraging teens to participate in age appropriate activities lead through peer role models who facilitate internal activities such as SWAT, Passport to Manhood, Smart Girls, Life Skills, Digital U, where media presentations are created and designed presentations are promoted, and Money Matters, which certainly lives up to it’s promotion of "a positive place for teens" to congregate to meet with peers, and dances to hip-hop complements of UCF students.

Camp Orlando Summer Camp (ages 5 - 14): a safe and affordable summer camp program for youth. This five-day week program at 16 City recreation centers offers a variety of activities, including swimming, crafts, outdoor activities, nature programs, exciting field trips (additional expense), computer labs, arts and crafts, and special events. Sites may offer different activities according to the interests of the children who participate in programs.  

Computer Lab (all ages): Offering open lab for research, resume writing, homework, internet access, and other activities in the Center's Orlando Magic Computer Lab. Hours for open lab are:
     Mon - Fri:
8 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.
    
Sat 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

OASIS (Orlando After School Is Super) (ages 5 - 10): An after-school program for youth ages 5 to 10 that provides supervised activities for elementary school age children. Children can have access to opportunities such as homework assistance, computer labs, game rooms, cultural arts, pottery, arts and crafts, dance recitals and field trips to local attractions, football, and basketball games.

School Vacation Daze (ages 5- 10): A youth program coinciding with school holidays from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.  Offering fun activities during school breaks, children can enjoy crafts, outdoor activities, game rooms, and much more during the traditional Orange County Public School vacation calendar year. Register at site prior to school holidays.

UCF Reading Camp (ages 6 - 10): Sat 10 – 11:30 a.m., (Sept – Nov) (Feb - May) University of Central Florida education majors trained in effective reading strategies and reading clinic procedures bring those techniques to this high energy, highly motivated the elementary school age children who desire reading abilities sharing the love of reading in this highly motivated reading camp children succeed.

Adult Programs (ages 18 and older): Mon-Fri 8am-8pm & Sat. 10am-6pm. Fitness Room Memberships

Charmettes (age): 2nd & 4th Sat of each month 11a-2:30p, the program reaches out to young girls within the community and teaches them etiquette, which is code of behavior that delineates expectations for social behavior and learning the basics of social behavior.

Community Service Project: 2nd Sat of each Month 9a-12p, Local youths in the Parramore district get a chance to give back to their community by picking up trash.  As a way to show our appreciation a picnic lunch is provided to all volunteers.  Adults are welcome too!  

Cyber Café:  Mon-Fri, 8a-1p & 6p-8p & Sat 12p-6p. Sit and lounge in the lobby of the facility while using your own WIFI devices, interacting with your friends and accessing free internet services. Free and open to the public.

Daily Activities: (all ages) The Computer Lab and Game room are free for public use and are closed to the public during after-school and summer camp program hours.

Evening Programs: Mon - Fri, 6 - 8 p.m. Come and enjoy different activities each evening, game room, video challenge, cards, and reading.

Junior Counselor (ages 13 - 15): This year round program offers teens the opportunity to learn job skills by being interviewed, assist counselors and front desk personnel, assist with evaluations, attend field trips to businesses in the area, workshops, and seminars.

Young Fathers of Central Florida -Gents 2 Gentlemen (Ages 10-13): 3rd Thursday of each month from 6p-7p. A program geared towards tweens, that will focus on “character development” to include etiquette. Tweens will learn how to choose the correct clothing attire, groom oneself, respect each other, and foster pride and acceptability amongst their peers.

Rentals and Public Use:

John H. Jackson Community Center offers certain rooms within the facility for rent for events such as birthday parties, meetings, showers, and so on.
  • Multi-Purpose Room - $50 per hour - Capacity 100 persons.
  • Kitchen - $15 per hour - Capacity 10 persons.
Rental Policy and Procedures
  • $100 Damage Deposit Required. Deposit will be refunded 4 to 6 weeks after rental if no damage was found after the rental. Insurance is not refundable and prices range from $31 to $80 and will protect any injuries that may happen during the rental.
  • No Alcoholic Beverages allowed.
  • All rentals must be scheduled 14 days prior to event.
  • All rentals must be paid in full at time of booking.
  • Rentals must be cancelled at least 72 hours prior to event to receive a refund.
Public Use
  • Fitness Center memberships are available at daily, monthly, six month, and annual rates. For more information, call the Center.
  • Game Room and Computer Lab are open to the public at no charge during operational hours.
  • The Game Room and Computer Lab will close for the OASIS after school program from August through May from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
