Orlando
children will be able to celebrate a new place
to play at the Colonialtown Neighborhood
Center’s new playground. The new playspace will
be officially opened by Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer
and District 4 City Commissioner Patty Sheehan
on April 2, 2009 in honor of the 13th Annual
Children’s Week.
“Children's Week activities put a much-needed
spotlight on issues facing our children,’’ said
Children’s Week organizer Jason Zaborske. “This
is a great opportunity to bring thousands of
parents, children, professionals, advocates,
community leaders and concerned citizens
together to share valuable knowledge and
information about children's issues across the
state and in our state Capitol.”
Children's Week activities promote the health,
safety and well-being of children during
legislative session. As part of the Children’s
Week celebration, children across the City
designed and colored paper cutouts of their
hands which are now hanging in the Tallahassee
at the State Capitol Rotunda will serve as a
symbolic reminder for elected officials to be
mindful of legislative issues that enable all
children to grow and develop to their fullest
potential.
The City of Orlando believes in celebrating and
promoting the connections that support and
strengthen families and communities.
“Children live better lives when their families
are strong, and families are strong when they
live in communities that connect them to
economic opportunities, social networks, and
services. Families can come to playgrounds such
as this to spend time actively entertaining
their children for free,” said Mayor Dyer.
Mayor Buddy Dyer recently announced the
Strengthen Orlando initiative in his State of
the City address. As part of the Orlando Cares
pillar of the initiative, the City is working to
match individuals and families with free and low
cost programs at City parks, camping grounds,
playgrounds, community centers, after school
programs, summer programs and summer camps.
