Opportunities with FPR Volunteer Opportunities Overview The Families, Parks & Recreation Department includes the Parks Division, Recreation Division, Orlando After-School All-Stars, and Dubsdread Golf Course.
The City of Orlando
Parks Division is responsible for overseeing the parks, street
tree canopy, and open spaces throughout the
City. There are over 100 parks that are
located within the City, in neighborhoods,
adjacent to Community Centers, scenic parks,
parks with exercise courses, bike paths and
playgrounds.
Administration supports the
division through budget, payroll and
administrative services.
They design and oversee park
renovation and construction projects and
manage facility rentals and events.
The
Grounds Maintenance section
provides the City’s Parks with
adequate mowing, edging, trimming, trash
removal, mulching, sod/seeding, weeding,
rest-room cleaning and parking lot cleaning.
The Forestry section maintains the
street tree canopy; administers the City of
Orlando Tree Management Plan; enforces the
City’s Tree Protection Ordinance and removes
hazardous trees on City property.
The Environmental Horticulture
section is responsible for
landscape management of parks including
maintenance and installation of landscape
beds, pesticide application, and
fertilization in parks; installs and
maintains efficient irrigation systems for
Park landscape and turf areas; is
responsible for street tree planting
programs and Dedicated Tree Program.
The Green Up Orlando
program encourages
citizens and groups to plant trees and
shrubs, beautify their neighborhoods and
raise public awareness and pride in Orlando,
“The City Beautiful”, and promote the
benefits of volunteer efforts in partnership
with the City. The Orlando Community and Youth Trust, Inc. is a non-profit organization created on September 9, 1994, to support the mission of the City of Orlando Department of Families, Parks, and Recreation (FPR). It is FPR's fundraising entity, making projects possible that are not regularly part of the department's allocated funds. Projects and activities funded by the Trust enhance the quality of life for youth, families, and senior citizens living in the City of Orlando. The Orlando After-School All-Stars (formerly Orlando Inner-City Games) offers structured before and after-school programming at seven City of Orlando middle schools, an seven week summer camp program at five City of Orlando middle schools and additional after-schools, such as tennis, golf, ice hockey. Incentive field trips and a music and dance outreach program. The Orlando After-School All-Stars is a 501 c 3 organization, which partners with the City of Orlando’s Families, Parks & Recreation Department in providing quality middle school based programs. After-School All-Star is a chapter of the After-School All-Stars Foundation based in Los Angeles, California and founded and chaired by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Orlando chapter has an active of Board of Director representing City of Orlando and business leaders from the community.
