 Orlando's
Holden-Parramore Community Added to National Register of Historic Places
|
WHAT: |
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer will join District 5
City Commissioner Daisy W. Lynum and State Representative
Geraldine Thompson for a special ceremony unveiling
Parramore’s National Register of Historic Places district
marker that acknowledges the rich history of the community.
The National Register of Historic Places is the nation's
official list of objects, properties and communities that
merit preservation because of their significance in American
culture.
Founded in the late 1800s, the Holden-Parramore community is
the oldest and largest African American neighborhood in
Orlando and throughout its history was home to several
influential African American leaders.
This event is part of the five-year anniversary of the
Pathways for Parramore initiative, the City’s comprehensive
effort to revitalize Orlando’s historic Parramore community
through five key areas: housing, public safety, business
development, children and education and quality of life.
“I am pleased that the rich history of the Holden-Parramore
community has been recognized with such a positive honor,”
said Mayor Dyer. “Through the Pathways for Parramore
initiative, Commissioner Lynum and I have worked hard to
ensure that revitalization efforts blend with the
community’s history, transforming Parramore into the safe,
livable, sustainable and prosperous place where Orlando
citizens, businesses and institutions can thrive.”

- ABOUT PATHWAYS FOR PARRAMORE:
The Pathways for Parramore initiative came to fruition in June
2005 from a task force commissioned by Mayor Buddy Dyer in
November 2003. After more than six months of conducting research
and obtaining stakeholder input, the task force presented
recommendations in June 2004 and the initiative was formed. In
the five years since Pathways for Parramore was launched, the
City has made dramatic strides in the Parramore Heritage
Community including:
providing more than a half million dollars in assistance to
Parramore’s small businesses;
- the addition of 35 new and rehabilitated homes and 120 new
rental housing units; and
- an 80% decline in juvenile arrests since 2006.
ABOUT THE HOLDEN-PARRAMORE HISTORIC DISTRICT:
The Holden-Parramore Historic District is bounded by West Church
Street on the north, McFall Avenue on the west, Long Street and
West South Street on the south and South Division Avenue on the
east.
