Orlando’s newest destination, the Amway
Center will open in less than two weeks. In conjunction with
the development of the Amway Center, the City’s
transportation and planning experts have been working to
create a seamless transportation system that incorporates
multiple options, an improved road network, a
pedestrian-friendly culture, parking that is easy to access
and use of mass transit.
On Saturday, September 18, the City will
conduct a “Mock Transportation Exercise” to simulate traffic
and pedestrian patterns before and after events at the Amway
Center. This is the first of several pre and post event
trial exercises scheduled for the new Amway Center. City
Transportation, Parking and Police personnel are conducting
this mock exercise to be fully prepared for the opening of
the Amway Center on October 1, 2010.
This mock training exercise will utilize
all interactive traffic and parking management techniques
including dynamic message boards and traffic signal
preemption. City officials will be monitoring the exercise
via closed circuit television to better manage traffic
patterns and flows during events at Amway Center.
Volunteer drivers and pedestrians will
navigate the area and provide feedback regarding their
experience. Adjustment to the existing transportation plans
can be made to improve traffic flow for future events based
on the results of this and future exercises.
To assist patrons attending events at
Amway Center, the City will be launching a new, interactive
parking website and a smart phone parking app. These will
allow visitors to Downtown Orlando to easily identify their
best parking options and will include directions to and from
the Amway Center.
