FOR IMMEDIATE
RELEASE:
June 14, 2010 – ORLANDO, FL – This morning, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer
addressed hundreds of America's mayors as a featured speaker at the
2010 US Conference of Mayors Convention in Oklahoma City.
Dyer's remarks focused on describing Central Florida's nearly
half-century effort to create a passenger rail transit system for
the greater Orlando area and how regional partnerships made that
dream a reality this year with the securing of the SunRail commuter
line and a High Speed Rail system from Orlando to Tampa. Mayor
Dyer's presentation was part of a larger 4-City study on the
economic impact of High Speed Rail.
The US Conference of Mayors also adopted a resolution brought
forward by Mayor Dyer which calls on the President and Congress to
adopt a well-funded and dedicated source for the planning,
development and maintenance of high speed rail corridors throughout
our country.
Mayor Dyer also participated in an emergency meeting of mayors from
Florida and other gulf state cities. The group of mayors is
collectively working to assist the federal government in its
response to the oil spill, working to mitigate the economic and
environmental impact to all our communities and hold BP accountable.
At the morning session of the Conference, Orlando was selected as
host city for the 2012 US Conference of Mayors Annual Convention. In
June of 2012, our city will have the opportunity to welcome more
than 500 of America's mayors, presidential cabinet members and state
and federal lawmakers. More than just a chance to showcase Orlando,
the event will also infuse dollars into our local economy.
Mayor Dyer was also chosen to serve in a leadership capacity
in the United States Conference of Mayors. He was selected to serve
on the USCM Advisory Committee and was installed in this role Monday
afternoon.
More information on the study as well as a link to the Mayor's
remarks can be found on the US Conference of Mayors web site: www.usmayors.org.
