Orlando Fire Department Bomb Squad Receives FBI Re-Accreditation

WHAT:

Today, Mayor Buddy Dyer and Fire Chief James Reynolds will announce the National Re-accreditation of the Orlando Fire Department’s Bomb Squad. The reaccreditation of the squad is issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Hazardous Device Operations Center and Bomb Data Center for successful compliance to national standards regarding equipment, standard operating procedures, and personnel.

The City of Orlando Fire Department’s Bomb Squad is one of only 40 Fire Department Bomb Squads. The rest of 430 squads are law enforcement bomb squads there are a total of 35 nationally accredited public safety bomb squads in the State of Florida.

Orlando’s squad currently has 8 nationally-certified bomb technicians on board and all have received their basic training at the FBI's Hazardous Devices School. There are currently 2986 active bomb technicians in the U.S. assigned to Public service Bomb Squads.

The accreditation is in accordance with protocols set by the National Bomb Squad Commanders' Advisory Board and is administered by the FBI and is valid for a period of 5 years. The City of Orlando’s Bomb Squad Technicians are required to recertify as bomb technicians every three years.
