| WHAT: |
Mayor Buddy Dyer, the NBA, Toyota, and the
Orlando Magic will unveil two refurbished basketball courts at
the John H. Jackson Community Center. Mayor Dyer will join
Orlando Magic Community Ambassadors Nick Anderson and Bo Outlaw
to dedicate the new courts, followed by an exhibition game with
the City of Orlando’s Parramore Kidz Zone basketball team. The
center is located in the Parramore community, where both the
City of Orlando and the Orlando Magic has been committed to
revitalizing for the past several years. The courts were
refurbished using recycled materials.
Parramore Kidz Zone youth will play in a scrimmage game coached
by Anderson and Outlaw after the opening ceremony. Modeled after
the Harlem Children’s Zone, Parramore Kidz Zone launched by
Mayor Dyer in 2006, employs creative outreach to engage a
critical mass of Parramore’s children and linking them to
positive opportunities, including pre-kindergarten education,
parenting education, health care, mentoring, tutoring, and
constructive activities when school is out.
Funds for the newly renovated basketball court
were donated to Orlando Community and Youth Trust, Inc., a
non-profit organization that fundraises for the City’s Families,
Parks, and Recreation Department to provide facilities,
scholarships, programs and activities that are not regularly
part of the department's allocated funds. Projects and
activities funded by the Orlando Community and Youth Trust, Inc.
enhance the quality of life for the people of the community
living in the City of Orlando.
Now in its second season, Toyota Project
Rebound is a community initiative established by the NBA and
Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. The program includes 21 hands-on
community service projects that will be hosted by NBA, WNBA, and
NBA Development League teams, and will include court
refurbishments, the creation of Reading & Learning Centers, and
other Legacy Projects providing youth safe places to live,
learn, or play.
