On Friday, June 26, 2009, Orlando City Attorney Mayanne Downs will be sworn in as the President Elect of the Florida Bar Association. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer will attend the ceremony which is being held as part of the Florida Bar Association’s 2009 annual convention. In June 2010 Downs will become the organization's fourth woman president since its founding in 1950. Downs is also the first City Attorney to ever hold the position. Downs has served as Orlando’s City Attorney since 2007. Downs is also an attorney with the firm of King, Blackwell, Downs & Zender, P.A. She has served on the Florida Bar Association Board of Governors since 2002. Downs has practiced law for more than 20 years. She graduated from the University of Florida Law School with honors. She is a past president of the Orange County Bar Association, Central Florida Association for Women Lawyers and the Orange County Legal Aid Society.
