The City of Orlando and Turner Construction Invite
Business Owners to a Free 6-week Training Course as part of Venues Project

June 23, 2009 – Orlando, FL -- Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, District 5 City Commissioner Daisy Lynum and Turner Construction invite local business owners, especially minority and women-owned firms, to take part in a free six-week training course that would enhance their ability to compete and economically benefit from the $1.1 billion Community Venues project, the largest public/private partnership in Central Florida history.

Turner Construction, a nationally-recognized general contractor and program manager for the new Orlando Events Center, is working with the City's BLUEPRINT Program Office to conduct the six-week construction management training course that begins July 14 and ends August 25. The course includes 12 sessions, which occur twice-weekly. The class topics include an estimating bootcamp, project and budget control, strategic business planning, risk management, construction accounting and other issues vital to the success of construction-related businesses. Classes will be held at the Varsity Club at the Florida Citrus Bowl located at One Citrus Bowl Place. A graduation ceremony will be held on August 27.

Guysen Bohler, co-owner of IROK Constructional Services, attended the Turner Construction training course in 2008 and recommends it to anyone interested in expanding their business expertise to seek larger contracts. “After completing Turner’s course, I knew I could compete with the best of them,” said Bohler. IROK later earned a $1.3 million Events Center contract for the construction of locker and toilet facilities.

Yet the Turner program isn’t limited to those in construction. Patricia (known to her friends and associates as “PC”) Carter completed the course in the spring while she was an account executive for a staffing company that specialized in construction employment placement. “You don’t have to be in construction to benefit,” said Carter. “It’s for all businesses, and for all aspects of business, from establishing a business plan to good bookkeeping practices. The Turner course benefited my life, not just my employer.” Carter believes that listing her Turner program certificate on her resume helped her find her new job, as a Fair Housing Coordinator for the Urban League in New York City.

Janeiro Coulter, BLUEPRINT Special Projects Manager, says that minority and women-owned firms like IROK are ideal for the Turner course. “Business owners are going to learn valuable business skills that they can take out into the public sector and compete more successfully for contracts,” said Coulter. “Whether it’s a new business or an established business, the Turner course gives entrepreneurs effective business, industry, and marketing tools that they’ll need to succeed in today’s tighter business market. And it’s free! What could be better?”

The BLUEPRINT is the City’s initiative that ensures significant opportunity for minority and women business enterprise (M/WBE) firms as well as individual workers – many of whom come from the targeted populations that include Parramore residents, the homeless and ex-offenders – hired to work on the Community Venues projects.

Minority and women business owners who wish to participate in the BLUEPRINT/Turner Construction Management Course must RSVP by July 10 to Marya Ekon at (407) 246-2687 or via email Marya.Ekon@cityoforlando.net.
