On Tuesday, May 26, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and
Police Chief Val Demings will announce a new effort as part of the
City’s ongoing public safety initiatives. In 2008, 63% of homicide
suspects were age 25 or younger. As the summer months approach, this new
campaign is geared toward preventing that age demographic from engaging
in criminal activity.
In 2006, Mayor Dyer launched a three-year Public
Safety Initiative, which put additional police officers patrolling our
streets, established the SAFE Orlando Task Force to develop short and
long-term recommendations, initiated the Illegal Gun Bounty program and
OPD’s deployment of TAC units and Operation Delta.
