In celebration of the 39th annual Earth Day, the City
of Orlando is hosting a free celebration at Bill Frederick Park at
Turkey Lake. The event will feature a tree giveaway, educational booths,
environmental activities for children, learning to fish, hiking tours,
"Out-on-a-limb" tree climbing, and new recycling opportunities. The
trees will be available on a first come, first served basis to City of
Orlando residents with an ID or OUC bill for proof of residency.
Visitors will be able to utilize the on-site collection of tires, motor
oil, and vehicle batteries so they can safely dispose of these hazardous
waste materials. Volunteer opportunities will also be available for
planting trees and invasive plant removal. Earth
Day first began in 1970 in response to a time when pollution caused
rivers to catch on fire and dense clouds of smog obscured cities. Since
then, Earth Day has served as an opportunity to educate people about the
importance of safeguarding the natural environment.
For more information on the event, call Bill Frederick
Park at Turkey Lake at (407) 299-5581.
