Mayor Buddy Dyer, District 6 Commissioner Samuel B.
Ings and Fire Chief Jim Reynolds will officially open the State’s first
LEED-Silver Fire Station. Orlando’s Fire Station 7, serving the
Washington Shores and Lake Mann neighborhoods, is the City’s fifth LEED
certified fire station, the national standard for green buildings.
The 10,500 sq. ft state-of-the-art facility will house engine, tower,
rescue and air trucks with Advance Life Support capabilities. Under the
Green Works Orlando initiative, Fire Station 7 was constructed with an
emphasis on added functionality, energy efficiency and water
conservation.
The City of Orlando recently celebrated the one year anniversary of
Green Works Orlando. In October 2007, the City launched the
comprehensive plan to protect our natural resources, encourage
environmentally-friendly lifestyles and business practices and engage
everyone who lives, works and visits Central Florida in the effort to
“go green.” Since the implementation of Green Works Orlando:
- Orlando has been designated a “Solar American
City” by the U.S. Department of Energy.
- A Parramore resident moved into the first LEED
Certified affordable home.
- Mayor Dyer signed the U.S. Conference of Mayors
Climate Protection Agreement.
- The City is converting every stop light and
pedestrian signal to LED technology.
- Mayor Dyer introduced Green Works Business, an
educational program to share best practices on how businesses can
bridge the gap between traditional business interests and the
interests of preserving and protecting the environment and building
a more sustainable society.
