WHAT:

Mayor Buddy Dyer will learn the inner workings of
Orlando’s latest crime-fighting tool, I.R.I.S., as he “works-along” with
members of the Orlando Police Department. From learning how individuals
will monitor the activity captured by IRIS cameras to actually
installing one of the state-of-the-art systems, Mayor Dyer will get an
up-close view of the system and its technology which will play an
important role in enhancing the safety and quality of our community.
I.R.I.S. (Innovative Response to Improve Safety) is
OPD’s safety camera program. Using downtown Orlando’s federally-funded
homeland security network as a foundation, the Department will deploy
additional “smart cameras” around the City. Specially trained OPD
personnel will be able to monitor those cameras 24 hours a day from a
central command center. The cameras will allow officers to intervene in
crimes as, or even before, they happen.
I.R.I.S. will “go live” later this year.
History of Work-Alongs
As part of Mayor Dyer’s commitment to providing citizens with the high
quality service they have come to expect, he participates in monthly
work-alongs with various City staff. Mayor Dyer has worked with Code
Enforcement Officers, gone door-to-door with Orlando Police Officers
delivering valuable City information to residents in the Parramore
Heritage Neighborhood, assisted City staff and children of the Nap Ford
Community School in planting a community garden and worked in the
customer service and development review areas of Permitting Services.
