MAYOR BUDDY DYER AND COMMISSIONER SHEEHAN HONOR DEDICATED CITY EMPLOYEES WITH NEW ROAD

WHAT: Ever wonder what it takes to have a road named after you? In the City of Orlando, you must be one of the longest serving employees, dedicate more than 80 years of combined service to our citizens and contribute countless hours to our community.

Mayor Buddy Dyer and District 4 Commissioner Patty Sheehan will officially unveil and dedicate a new road in Greenwood Cemetery.

The new road, Chewning Way, will be the first named road in the cemetery. Its namesakes are two former members of the City family, Bob and Grace Chewning. Mr. Chewning served the Orlando Police Department for 30 years and became the 17th Chief of Police and eventually, the City’s first Director of Public Safety. The road will be dedicated on what would have been his 85th birthday.

Grace Chewning served the citizens of Orlando for 49 years. Beginning her career with the City as a secretary at Greenwood, she worked her way up to become City Clerk where she remained for 26 years. Mrs. Chewning also gives back to her community by serving on the boards of the Orlando Federal Credit Union, Orlando Remembered and the Women’s Executive Council.

Chewning Way will provide access to an area of the cemetery not previously available for use. The new spaces this area provides will generate additional revenue that will be used to continue maintaining Greenwood’s 100 acres in perpetuity.
