Smart Growth and Green Spaces

The City is undergoing several major planning initiatives to improve the quality of life throughout the community, including:

Creative Village – redevelopment of the former Amway Arena site into one of the first LEED-ND mixed-use developments in Florida

Transit-Oriented Development studies near the Florida and Orlando Region Hospital SunRail stations.

Lake Nona Medical City – an expansive development which will eventually become Orlando’s second downtown. Lake Nona includes hospitals, medical research, and universities. It will eventually contain mixed-use commercial and residential neighborhoods, much of what will be LEED certified.

Corridor Planning – The City will implement form-based plans for all the major commercial corridors. Recently completed plans include S. Orange Avenue / Michigan Street, Edgewater Drive, Semoran Boulevard, and Washington Shores.

Orlando’s Urban Forest

The City has enacted a 40% tree canopy coverage goal. The first coverage study will be completed by Fall 2010.

The 10,000 Tree Initiative - The City successfully planted the 10,000th tree in January 2010. The Initiative was started as a result of hurricane damage in 2004.

1,519 trees were planted last year by the Parks Department in 2010.

The STRATUM study concluded that trees on City of Orlando property annually:

• Reduce storm water run-off by 283.7 million gallons,
• Save 3,369 mWh of electricity valued at $440,000 as the result of shade,
• Remove 1,400 lbs of criteria pollutants, and
• Sequester 13,500 tons of carbon dioxide

The City opened its first Community Garden in 2008 in Parramore. Due to its overwhelming success, the City has created two additional community gardens in Spring 2010, and is planning for more.
