District 2 EventsApril 2012 2012 Relay For Life at the Jackson Middle School This year, the Azalea Park Relay for Life event raised over $11,000 for the American Cancer Society. Commissioner Robert Stuart (City District 3) attended the event on behalf of Commissioner Ortiz. This year, due to weather conditions, they moved the event to the cafeteria. Congrats to Principal Ruiz, his staff and everyone else involved in the event for an awesome job done!
EPNA Dog Walk On Saturday, April 21, 2012 the Engelwood Park Neighborhood celebrated their First Community Dog Walk. Hats off to Mr. Lynn Hill and Ms. Debra Alstott for a great event!
Rural/Metro Ambulance Donated an Ambulance to Haiti In November 2011, Commissioner Tony Ortiz went to the Dominican Republic on a government-related visit to establish a working relationship with Senator Rosa Sonia Mateo, from the Province of Dajabon, which borders on Haiti. While in Dajabon, Commissioner Ortiz met Consul of Haiti in Atlanta, Mr. Ghandi Thomas. When Commissioner Ortiz returned and found out about the ambulances that Rural/Metro Ambulance was going to retired, he also thought about Haiti. On Friday, April 20, 2012, Consul Ghandi Thomas traveled from Atlanta to Orlando to received an ambulance from Rural/Metro Ambulance.
Rural/Metro Ambulance Donates Two Ambulances to the Dominican Republic In November 2011, Commissioner Tony Ortiz went to the Dominican Republic on a government-related visit to establish a working relationship with Senator Rosa Sonia Mateo. Commissioner Ortiz’ hope was to bring manufacturing companies from the Dominican Republic to Orlando. While meeting with Senator Mateo, Commissioner Ortiz learned that a hospital in Senator Mateo’s home, Province of Dajabon, which borders on Haiti, had a critical shortage of ambulances. Upon his return, he learned that Rural/Metro Ambulance was getting ready to retire some of their older, high-mileage ambulances.
Rural/Metro worked with Commissioner Ortiz’s office and with Senator
Mateo’s Representative, Mr. Alejandro Gonzalez, to make arrangements to
donate the ambulances. Immediately after turning over the keys on
Friday, April 13, 2012, the ambulances were driven to a port in Brevard
County at which time they will be taken by boat to Dajabon. Just two
days ago, Gonzalez said a man died in the streets of Dajabon because the
hospital had no ambulance to rescue him.
Engelwood Senior Center Easter Celebration On April 12, 2012, the Engelwood Seniors First Program celebrated their Easter Hat Contest/Celebration.
District 2 Neighborhood Watch Kick Off Commissioner Ortiz celebrated a Neighborhood Watch Kick Off event on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at the Dover Shores Community Center. Special presentations were given related to Home and Automobile Security. One of Commissioner Tony Ortiz' goals for the next four years is to have a Neighborhood Watch Program at each of District 2's Neighborhoods. March 2012 Emergency Operations Center Visit from Mayors of Puerto Rico On March 29, 2012, Commissioner Ortiz welcomed 12 Mayors and their staff members, from Puerto Rico, who came to Orlando to attend a National Hurricane Conference. This meeting took place at the City of Orlando Emergency Office.
Children from the Engelwood Neighborhood Center Participated at a Conservation Day Camp at Animal Kingdom Sixty children from the Engelwood Neighborhood attended, for free, a Conservation Day Camp sponsored by Disney at the Animal Kingdom Park during their Spring Break (Monday, March 26, 2012 until Friday, March 30, 2012), The children were picked up in the morning at the center and transported to the park every day. The camp was designed to inspire children to take action by exposing them to current animal, habitat, and conservation issues in a fun and interactive environment. Commissioner Ortiz sent off the children during their first day at the camp.
Park of the Americas' Community Office Grand Opening On Thursday, March 15, 2012, Commissioner Tony Ortiz, District 2 Neighborhood Leaders Council members and Family, Parks & Recreation Staff opened the Park of the Americas' Community Room. The Community Room will be available for District 2 Community Leaders to hold Homeowners and Neighborhood Watch meetings. Commissioner Ortiz will be working at least twice a month from this office starting in May 2012. The Park of the Americas will be going through a general restoration and we are hoping to open its doors in 2013.
February 2012 NBA All-Star Food Distribution Commissioner Ortiz joined Mayor Dyer, Commissioner Daisy Lynum, the City of Orlando Families, Parks and Recreation, the National Basketball Players Association and the Feed The Children organization and provided food to families at the Emery Hamilton Sports Complex. The National Basketball Players Association provided eight semi truck loads of food that were delivered to three City facilities including Engelwood Neighborhood Center, Dr. James R. Smith Neighborhood Center and Emery Hamilton Sports Complex.
Johnson Manor Valentine Party For the past three years, Commissioner Ortiz has joined the Johnson Manors Seniors Resident Association during their St. Valentines' celebration. He is very grateful for their friendship and the hospitality that they have always given him.
Chinese Lunar Parade On Sunday, February 5, 2012, Commissioner Tony Ortiz participated during the Dragon Parade for the Lunar New Year Festival sponsored by the Chinese American Association of Central Florida, YESS (Youth Enrichment & Senior Services), REACH (Recognizing, Experiencing Asian Cultural Heritage and Mills/50. More than 100 people participated in the parade from different local Asian associations.
January 2012 Second Annual Anti Human Trafficking Awareness Event On Saturday, January 28, 2012 Commissioner Tony Ortiz along side with Commissioner Robert Stuart read a City Proclamation at the Second Annual Anti Human Trafficking Event at Lake Eola.
International Graffiti Artist, Hector "Nicer" Nazario Paints a Roberto Clemente Mural for the Orange County Regional History Center and Receives a Plaque From Commissioner Tony Ortiz In the morning of Saturday, January 28, 2012 and in conjunction with the "Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente Exhibition" from the Smithsonian Institute and Smithsonian Latino Center, International Graffiti Artist, Hector "Nicer" Nazario painted a mural of Puerto Rican Baseball legend, Roberto Clemente in front of the Orange County Regional History Center. Commissioner Ortiz took advantage of this opportunity to give a plaque to Mr. Nazario, who painted a mural of Roberto Clemente at the Azalea Park in District 2 late last year. He also gave a plaque to Azalea Park Coach and Board of Directors Vice President, Mr. Earl Lugo, for his hard work and commitment to the children of our community.
Neighborhood Leaders Council Meeting On Thursday, January 19, 2012, Mr. Jeff Arms, City of Orlando Project Manager, provided updates about the Semoran Vision Plan to the District 2 Neighborhood Leaders Council members.

Officer Eddie Rosado escorted Santa Claus while cruising the Engelwood
Park Neighborhood on his Red Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Lots of children and adults came out of their homes to
wave to Santa Claus.

the El Dorado Apartments 2011 Holiday Get Together.

These two organizations provided toys and food for families in distress.

The event took place at the Dover Shores Community Center.

November 2011 Safety in the Park Day at Demetree Park Sponsored by Rural/Metro Ambulance On Sunday, November 20, 2011, Rural/Metro Ambulance sponsored a Safety in the Park Day at the District 2 Demetree Park. Commissioner Ortiz attended the event and had the opportunity of talking to City residents in a very relaxing atmosphere. Attendees enjoyed an afternoon of safety tips, a chance to see the inside of an ambulance, food, face painting and balloon sculpting.
Johnson Manor Seniors Apartments Thanksgiving Day Celebration On Friday, November 18, 2011, Commissioner Ortiz and his team were invited to participate during the Johnson Manor Seniors Residents Association Thanksgiving Day Celebration. It was an afternoon full of camaraderie, music and food!
Teach-In Day On November 16, 2011, the District 2 Team: Commissioner Tony Ortiz, his Aide, Ana L. Cruz and OPD Liaison Officer Eddie Rosado participated during the Orange County Public Schools Teach-In Day at the Jackson Middle School. Each team member was placed in a different classrooms with students. They talked about their education, professional career and future plans. At the end, they answered questions from the students. They had a great time. Thank you Jackson Middle School students!
Engelwood Seniors First Group Thanksgiving Day Celebration and Art Workshop On November 15, 2011, Commissioner Ortiz joined the Engelwood Seniors First Program for their annual Thanksgiving Holiday luncheon. The lunch was provided by Sedanos' Supermarket. This year an Art Class by local artist, Ms. Sina Sutter was given to the seniors. The class was sponsored by Humana, Dr. Maria Garcia from LeHans Medical Center and Lynil Visiting Nurses. The seniors enjoyed very much the class and the food.

Jackson Middle School Veterans Day Celebration Commissioner Ortiz was invited to speak during the Jackson Middle School Veterans Day Celebration on Thursday, November 10, 2011. He spoke in front of a group of parents, students and local veterans. Commissioner Ortiz is a US Marine Corps Persian Gulf War Veteran.
October 2011 Engelwood Seniors First Group Halloween Celebration On Thursday, October 27, 2011, the Engelwood Seniors First Group celebrated their annual Halloween Party.
District 2 Community Fall Festival Commissioner Tony Ortiz celebrated the first District 2 Community Fall Festival on Friday, October 22, 2011 at the Jackson Middle School Track Field. More than 300 people attended this event. Children played all night, while parents listened to music played by local pianist and vocalist, Mr. Randal Branham and Latin Group "Son Bien Chevere." Special thanks to Orlando Federal Credit Union, OUC The Reliable and BB&T for donating towards the event.

September 2011 American Gold Star Mother's Reception The first City of Orlando Gold Star Mothers' Reception took place on Sunday, September 25, 2011 at the City Rotunda. Commissioner Ortiz presented a proclamation on behalf of our Mayor, Buddy Dyer. American Gold Star Mothers are an organization of mothers whose sons or daughters served and died so that this world might be a better place in which to live.
City of Orlando Hispanic Heritage Month Kick Off Event On Thursday, September 15, 2011, Mayor Buddy Dyer and Commissioner Tony Ortiz kicked off the Hispanic Heritage Month with a great celebration at City Hall. More than 200 people participated at this great event. September 15 through October 15 America celebrates the culture and traditions of our Hispanic citizens.

August 2011 Semoran Business Partnership (SEBUPA) Clean Up Event On Saturday, August 27, 2011 more than 200 volunteers participated during the Semoran Business Partnership (SEBUPA) Clean Up Event. Mayor Buddy Dyer, City Commissioners Tony Ortiz, Phi Diamond, Orange County Commissioner Lui Damiani, State Representative Darren Soto, OPD Officers, Sheriff Department Officers, Business Owners, Community Organizations, Students, etc. attended the event and helped SEBUPA to clean up the Semoran Boulevard, from Lake Underhill Road to Colonial SR 50. Thanks to Keep Orlando Beautiful for providing the materials and to City and County Code Enforcement officers for driving around collecting the trash and providing water to the volunteers. This is their second event this year. The first one was on February 2011.
May 2011 Semoran Business Partnership Monthly Meeting Guests Speakers were Mayor Buddy Dyer, Commissioner Tony Ortiz and Orange County Commissioner Lui Damiani Mayor Dyer and Commissioner Ortiz announced the First City's Market Street District: the Semoran Business Partnership! "Market Street" is a unique designation specifically designed for the City of Orlando for districts that do not necessary meet the historic preservation requirement for a Main Street designation. The Semoran Business Partnership joins the City's five existing districts in the Orlando Main Street Program - Audubon Park Garden District, College Park Partnership, Downtown South, Ivanhoe Village and Mills 50.
2011 Mayor's Neighborhood and Community Summit On Saturday, May 14, 2011, Commissioner Ortiz joined Mayor Dyer during his 2011 Mayor's Neighborhood and Community Summit. More than 200 neighborhood, community and faith based organization leaders and volunteers participated in this year's Summit. The Summit offered 16 workshops divided into two sessions. This year Mayor Dyer presented the Neighborhood
Champion Award. Among the nominees, two were residents of District
2; Mr. Tom Golay and Mr. Juan Triana. The 2011 Inaugural
Neighborhood Champion Award was given to Neighborhood Park Resident, Mr.
Tom Golay. Our sincere congratulations to Mr. Golay. We are
very proud of him!
Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney, 2011 Inaugural Neighborhood Champion Award Recipient, Mr. Tom Golay, Commissioner Ortiz and Mr. Juan Triana Demetree Park Clean Up By Students from the Colonial High School National Honor Society Hats off to the Colonial High School National Honor Society Members who volunteered at the Demetree Park on Saturday, May 14, 2011. Close to 20 students picked up trash, raked mulch, painted the boardwalk, cleaned the playground and more! Thank you so much to Ms. Marjorie Ceballos and the National Honor Society Students for taking time to volunteered at this park!
Cinco de Mayo Celebration On Thursday, May 5, 2011, Commissioner Ortiz joined Mrs. Blanquita Trabold, from Casa de Mexico, Mayor Buddy Dyer, Mexican Consul, Mr. Alberto Fierro, Orlando Magic Linda Gonzalez and guests to their annual celebration of Cinco de Mayo, at the City Hall Rotunda.
Visit to Taft Head Start Center District 2 Team: Commissioner Tony Ortiz, OPD Liaison Officer Alberto Negron and Commissioner Ortiz's Aide, Ana L. Cruz, visited the Taft Head Start Center on May 5, 2011. They read and played with the students. They had a great time. Thank you to the Principal, Ms. Mercedes Grunon and her staff for the hospitality!
April 2011 Single Marines Volunteer Event at Park of the Americas Over the last two years, the annual Single Marine Program conference has ended with the participants reaching out to the community that hosts the conference through a volunteer opportunity. On April 15, 2011 more than one hundred Marines volunteered at the District 2 Parks of the America. Commissioner Ortiz, a former Marine himself, joined the group on that day. He would like to also thank City of Orlando Green-Up Manager, Mrs. Jan Rahill, for doing an outstanding job organizing the event.
Southpointe Condominiums Hispanic Celebration On Sunday, April 10, 2011 Commissioner Ortiz joined residents of the Southpointe Condominiums for a picnic which theme was the Hispanic Culture. Everyone enjoyed an afternoon of good food, music and camaraderie.
March 2011 Premio Paloma de la Paz 2011 - 2011 Dove of Peace Award On Saturday, March 26, 2011 at the Asociacion Borinquena, Commissioner Ortiz received the honor of being one of this year's recipient of the Paloma de la Paz Award. This award is given to artists, athletes, community and political leaders for their contributions to the community by Great Productions International, Inc.

District 2 Semoran Wall Groundbreaking Ceremony On Friday, March 18, 2011, Commissioner Tony Ortiz celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for the Semoran Wall that is part of his Vision Plan for the revitalization of the Semoran Corridor. The constructor, Gomez Construction, began the project on Monday, March 21, 2011. It is schedule to be finalize by July 2011. Commissioner Ortiz was joined by Mr. Byron Brooks, City Administrative Officer, District 1 Commissioner Phil Diamond, District 3 Commissioner Robert Stuart, City Senior Planner, Mr. Bruce Hossfield, City Employees and residents of the area.
Colonel Joe Kittinger Park Reopening Ceremony On Wednesday, March 15, 2011 Mayor Buddy Dyer and Colonel Joe Kittinger joined Commissioner Tony Ortiz at the re-opening ceremony of the Colonel Joe Kittinger Park. This park is located at 305 South Crystal Lake Drive. Colonel Joseph William Kittinger II was born on July 27, 1928 in Tampa, Florida. He is a former Command Pilot and career military officer in the United States Air Force. He is most famous for his participation in Project Manhigh and Project Excelsior, holding the records for having the highest, fastest and longest skydive and as being the first man to make a solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in a gas balloon. Serving as a fighter pilot during the Vietnam War, he was shot down and spent 11 months in a North Vietnamese prison. District 2 Crime Free Multi-Housing Event at Danube Apartments
Through the City’s new Crime Free Multi-Housing Initiative, rental
property owners and residents are partnering with the Orlando Police
Department to eliminate crime in multi-housing rental properties.

Taiwan National Day Celebration and Food Festival On Saturday, March 12, 2011 Commissioner Tony Ortiz's Aide, Ana Cruz, attended the Taiwan National Day Celebration and Food Festival. This year's event was organized by the Florida Chinese Business Association. More than 100+ people attended this year's festival that was full of food, colors and wonderful performances by beautiful dancers and jugglers.
February 2011 Semoran Boulevard Clean Up! On Saturday, February 26, 2011 the Semoran Business Partnership had their 1st Semoran Clean Up! event. More than 200+ volunteers gathered to pick up garbage in parts of the Semoran Boulevard between Curry Ford Road and Lake Underhill Road. Mayor Buddy Dyer, City of Orlando Commissioner Tony Ortiz, Orange County Commissioner Lui Damiani and State Representative Darren Soto were among the volunteers that attended and participated during this event.
Azalea Park Little League On Saturday, February 26, 2011 Commissioner Tony Ortiz joined the children, parents and families of the Azalea Park Little League during this year's Opening Ceremony. This year, the Azalea Park Little League is celebrating their 51st Anniversary.
